Asphalt 7: Heat goes free on iOS, probably for limited time

Gameloft’s Asphalt 7: Heat racing game is now free in the Apple’s AppStore. It was released in June 2012 on iOS and until now it maintained the $0.99 price tag.

Asphalt 7: Heat offers 60 different cars, 15 challenging tracks, 6 game modes and eye-candy graphics.

Nvidia’s SHIELD benchmark spotted, blows away the competition

One of the few exciting things we saw at CES this past January was the announcement of Nvidia’s new Android-running handheld gaming console codenamed SHIELD, powered by its new Tegra 4 chipset.

While not much has been heard of SHIELD or Tegra 4 since, a recently-spotted benchmark in AnTuTu reveals that the SoC is not only still alive and kicking, but has the potential to be a real contender when it comes to next generation mobile performance.

Much of the spotlight recently has been taken by Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 600 and 800 platforms recently, but the Tegra 4 results, should they prove to be legit, have the potential to be quite a thorn in Qualcomm’s side, as they handily beat out the chart-topping numbers posted by the latest Samsung, LG and HTC flagships.

Another as-yet-unknown detail revealed by the AnTuTu numbers is a quad-core processor clocked at 1.9 GHz – something Nvidia didn’t mention during the initial launch of Project SHIELD. Android 4.2.1 also appears to be the software version, but that’s hardly a surprise.

Google allows iOS developers to use Chrome instead of Safari to open links from their apps

After the launch of Google Now for iOS (check out our full review), Google’s charge on Apple’s mobile platform continues with the little, but important piece of code that allows developers to open links from their apps in Chrome instead of Safari.

The new feature is dubbed iOS links and iOS developers can utilize it to open links in Chrome; something that Google has been doing with its YouTube, Maps and Gmail apps for quite a while now.

In fact, Google is now in a place on iOS where its iOS app ecosystem is very well tied together. YouTube, map and URL links are opened in their respective Google apps (YouTube, Google Maps and Google Chrome) and not Apple’s default ones. That is, if the aforementioned are installed in the first place.

Additionally, if developers use the new piece of code, once the URL is loaded in Chrome, the back button is automatically replaced with the name of their app. This way, users can go back in the app with a single tap.

The search giant is literally breathing in Apple’s neck and is relentlessly pushing for its apps to be preferred to the default iOS ones. It’ll be interesting to see what Apple’s response to Google’s invasion would be come WWDC.

Ouya torn apart, console found to be quick and easy to repair

The Ouya team has been posting shipping updates as promised (you need to be a backer to read those) and while there are still units waiting to head out to their owners, iFixit received one and – you guessed it – took it apart.

So, what exactly do you get for your $99? Well, two things – the console itself and a Bluetooth controller.

The console itself is easy enough to take apart – there’s a single assembly inside, which consists of the motherboard, soldered heatsink and a screwed in fan. The fan is a standard off-the-shelf 12V fan that’s easy to replace. Other than that assembly, there are five weights at the bottom of the console to make it stable when you plug in the cables.

The controller has more bits in it, but at its core is a single Broadcom BCM20730 Bluetooth 3.0 transceiver, which packs a Cortex-M3 CPU that handles the buttons, joysticks and touchpad and sending them over to the console. The console itself is, of course, powered by the Tegra 3 chipset and includes a Wi-Fi / Bluetooth 4.0 (not 3.0) receiver, plus a USB 2.0 to Ethernet 10/100 adapter.

You can read the step by step disassembly process over at iFixit. The Ouya scored 9/10 on the reparability scale – very easy to fix with standard screws and modular components, but the soldered heatsink and especially the soldered joysticks cost it a point.

Rockstar issues a dozen new Grand Theft Auto V screenshots

Though static, the new batch of screenshot is more action-packed than ever. There are car and bike chases, airplane flights, scuba-diving, skydiving. All screenshots showcase the game’s gorgeous scenery and graphics. One screenshot even depicts the three main game characters – Michael, Franklin and Trevor.

Exactly a week ago, the company released a trailer showcasing the protagonists in detail. Rockstar boasts that the game features the biggest map it has ever created and the latest screenshots definitely support this claim.

Expected to launch on September 17, Grand Theft Auto V is going to be available for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Sadly, PC gamers are left out, as the company is figuring a way to save the game from being pirated.
